QUILT CONTEST RULES

 1.   The quilt(s) which you choose to submit for competition must not have been previously entered for competition at QHC or exhibited at QHC.  Please credit the traditional pattern or commercial pattern from which you took inspiration or from which your quilt is made—be sure to read Rule #4.

 2.   Enter your cloth quilts by submitting digital images as follows:

One shot of the whole quilt.

One close-up, detail shot to show quilting and border.

Note:  If the back of your quilt is intended to be viewed (space permitting) then an image of this view must be submitted as well.

 3.   Quilt must have been completed since 2004 and be constructed/quilted by person(s) named on the entry form.  Group quilts are by 2 or more quilters.  Quilt(s) worked on in any way by more than one person, including the actual quilt stitching, must be entered in the team/group quilt category. Name of group or all quilters involved must be submitted.

 4.   We request that you do not submit kit-type or patterned quilts, including Block of the Month quilts.  These types of quilts may only be submitted by the original artist and then only if they will be displayed at QHC prior to any form of publication for purchase or advertisement.

 5.  Quilts which contain both piecing and appliqué should be entered in the category of the predominate technique.

6.    Quilts submitted for the QHC Invitational Category are not counted in the limit per quilter for the juried and judged portion of the show; any number may be submitted to this category provided they meet the category criteria. They will receive judge’s comments and a product prize but are not eligible for monied prizes.

7.    Other techniques:  crazy, trapunto, stenciling, whole cloth, embroidered, batik, painted, etc.

 8.    Limit is two entries per quilter; limit one entry per category.  This limit does not include quilts entered in the QHC Invitational Category (see #6 above).

 9.     Quilt must be complete, clean and undamaged to qualify for exhibit.

10.    Quilts juried into the competition must be shipped to arrive in Lancaster by Friday, March 27, 2009.  They must be available for judging and display from Friday, March 27 – Monday April 6, 2009. They will be return shipped Monday, April 6, 2009.

11.    Contest entry implies consent to photograph quilt for use in event-related publications and publicity.  If your quilt has been professionally photographed and you submit that image for jurying, it is necessary to send a release for duplication of that image from the photographer.  This permits immediate release of the image for publicity should the quilt be an award winner.

12.    Entry fee of $10.00 per quilt, non-refundable, must accompany entry form along with a printout of the images submitted electronically.   Make checks payable to QHC/Barber Diversified.  To be accepted for QHC 2009, all entries must be received by Friday, February 6, 2009.  Please note there is no entry fee for the QHC Invitational Category.

13.   Print your name, address, telephone number and the name of the quilt on each printout for each entry.  Also, indicate the top of the images with the word “top” (or an arrow) at the appropriate edge.  Submit images of finished quilts only.  Others will be disqualified.

14.    In addition to submitting the entry form and the printouts of your images, you must also submit the digital images electronically by e-mailing rbbarber@qhconline.com and using “QHC 2009 Entry” in the subject box.  Use a separate e-mail per entry.  DO NOT SUBMIT SLIDE SHOWS OF YOUR IMAGE(S). Images must be JPG files with a minimum resolution of 800x600.

15.    Prize winners will be notified by telephone if possible. Awards will bepresented at the Awards Reception, Thursday evening, April 2, 2009, or mailed within two weeks to those unable to attend.

16.    Entries into the juried and judged show do not have to fit the show theme.

17.    Any prize within a category may not be awarded if it is determined that quilts being judged do not merit a prize.

See additional Category Definitions on the following page.

Viewer’s Choice - This award is given to the quilt that receives the most votes by those attending the event. The amount of the prize varies from year to year, depending on the sponsor—if there is a sponsor, but a ribbon is always awarded.

PLEASE NOTE:

Be precise in placing your quilt in a category—it will be judged in the category in which you place it. Be sure your quilt meets the size requirements of the category in which you have entered it. If not, it will not be eligible for competition prizes, but will be judged and receive comments.

TIPS FOR GOOD IMAGES:

  • The best time/location for photography is outside, sunlight (except in summer when overcast may be preferred, late in afternoon is just right). Morning light is blue, mid-day sun is too bright, afternoon light has a warm cast. Choose a calm day or site so the quilt will not move.
  • The quilt should be flat with a plain background (no people or parts of people, no props, no fasteners showing).
  • Be sure to get the entire quilt in the shot. Close-up may be taken of back or front to show quilting if desired.
  • Take several shots to insure a good one and to have one for insurance purposes and/or your own records.
  • Print your name, address, telephone number and the quilt’s name permanently on each image printout. Also be sure to indicate which side is supposed to be viewed up. Indicate with the word "top" or an arrow written on the appropriate  edge.

Producer’s note: there is an article entitled "Digital Entries 101" by Gloria Hansen in the November 2008 issue of Quilters Newsletter Magazine.

Producer’s note: for more information regarding quilt photography, consult the booklet entitled "Marketing Quilts" which is available from The Professional Quilter, 22412 Rolling Hill Lane, Laytonsville, MD 20882, (301) 482 -2345. www.professionalquilter.com.

NOTE: You must now submit digital or electronic images of your quilts. The images must be a JPG files with a minimum resolution of 800x600. DO NOT submit the images in a "slide show" format. Make sure that the orientation of the image is correctly positioned so that the top of the quilt or the detail shot is upright. Print your name, address, telephone number and the quilt’s name permanently on each image printout that you submit with the completed paper entry form.

PLEASE NOTE: This year, it will be possible to accept quilts for QHC 2009 which will need to be shipped directly to The American Quilter’s Society Show in Paducah, KY, after being displayed at QHC 2009. You may enter a quilt in both shows.
