Morna McEver Golletz of Laytonsville, MD, is the publisher/editor of The Professional Quilter Magazine. The magazine was first published in September 1983 to provide information pertinent to the growing audience of those for whom quilting had become a profession. Eleven years later, Morna purchased the company and resumed its publication. Today, The Professional Quilter provides key business information and networking opportunities to thousands of quilters around the world. As an early subscriber to the magazine, she quickly realized its value. Morna was a typical reader and a professional quilter who began quilting in January 1977, after watching a quilter at a craft show in Charlotte, NC. After the first class, a book of block patterns and making umpteen pillows, she knew she was hooked. Morna has taught beginning quilt-making, first in the adult education program and then expanding to include shops. Finally devoting herself to quilt-making full time, she began selling original design quilts and quilted clothing at juried and non-juried craft shows. Working in a small crafts cooperative, being juried into The Creative Hand, a fine crafts cooperative, and helping operate a full-time store in a mall were great learning experiences for business skills. Her focus on contemporary quilts led to a number of commissions. Eventually she went back to graduate school, earning a masters’ degree of journalism and worked as a journalist. In addition to articles on quilters, she found work in another field quilters enjoy—food. She was a regular contributor to a daily paper in Pennsylvania and also was responsible for the publications for the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association. In April 1994, Morna purchased The Professional Quilter and began to redesign and expand the publication. After 10 years, another redesign has just been finished. What Morna does combines her love of fabric and quilting with her training as a journalist, and she finds it rewarding to provide information for continuing the growth of the quilting industry.
